Three main resume formats are chronological, functional and combination. The one you choose can make a big difference in the impression you make. The point is to choose a professional resume format that will be effective and concise and emphasize the qualifications your prospective employer wants to see in a candidate. For example, if you are a recent graduate, it’s better to place education before work experience and vice versa if you are a highly qualified professional with many years of experience.


The traditional, default resume is a chronological. This type of resume shows your work history in reverse chronological order and contains job titles, names of employers, dates of employment, main accomplishments backwards 5-10 years. A standard chronological resume is best for those who have much experience in one particular field, want to stay in the same field and don’t have large employment gaps. This professional resume format is preferred by a great number of employers and recruiters. They like it as it is easy to read and clearly shows your work history and career growth/advancement. A chronological format is highly recommended for conservative career fields like law, banking, accounting as well as international job-seeking. So, if you feel like your work experience is your main strength, use this type of format.

Another type of a professional resume format is a functional format which is useful for those resume writers who have little work experience, want to change career fields, enter or reenter paid employment or have different work experience that is not directly related to the position applying. The body of a functional resume should highlight main skills and accomplishments. It means that the emphasis is placed on the skills, not on the experience. So, names of employers, job titles and dates may be left out. However, your resume should include such sections as a job objective, education, summary of qualifications and other work-related associations. This format is less common and not so preferred by employers, but if it’s professionally written, it can turn into an excellent marketing tool.

The third type of a professional resume services ​format is combination also called hybrid or chrono-functional. The work history section includes only a job title, dates of employment and a name of employer. There is no need to describe your duties in each job because this information is already mentioned in the functional sections. It’s a good way to highlight your main skills and achievements that are usually buried within presenting a strict chronology of jobs. This format works for job-seekers with a diverse job history or those who have large employment gaps, career changers, older workers and candidates with academic deficiencies.
